They also stated " The Spanish words are hidden in parentheses. This demonstrates the speakers struggle in not being able to mix the two languages. Her father wanted English spoken to the outside world and the Spanish hidden. The poet adds the parentheses to show her how her father disapproves of mixing the two languages.
