The story takes place in 1954, off Boston, on an island named Shutter Island. On this island raises itself a group of buildings in the sinister look. It is a psychiatric hospital sheltering mental sick patients having made guilty of criminal acts. Teddy begins to wonder about the real intentions of the director of the island. Blocked on the island by a storm, he begins to have hallucinations and wonders if he is not becoming the game of a terrible machination.
