Between July 1st and July 22nd of 2010 I had the opportunity to visit Kazakhstan. While most people would jump to conclusion that I went to meet Borat, I actually went with a purpose to learn about the culture and the people. I was astonished by what I learned and saw.
It is one of four other territories on this continent whose official language is English.

This painting was created in 1907. In this year, Rivera traveled from Mexico to Spain and I am unsure in which country this work was painted. I love this because I think that he looks very clever and sexy. I imagine that he thought very highly of himself. What makes this painting even better is that years later in 1941, he painted another self portrait and captures his own aging process which to me seems a brave move.

For my second blog on the art of Non-Western culture, I chose to once again delve into the world of music. I first heard of them two summers ago when they came to my town to play a show. The music was amazing to say the least. But even better then the music was the underlying story.
For my second blog that deals with arts around the world I want to go back the Americas and look into the rhythmic music created by the steel drums of Trinidad. When steel talks everyone listens. The piece I choose is a rendition of a song preformed with steel drums I thought this was the easiest way to look to see how steel drums can change a song from something most everyone has heard.
Wifredo was inspired by a peer of his, Picasso. He was originally in France but when it was invaded during the onset of WWII, he fled back to Cuba.
