Ecclesia is a Greek word. Used in the ancient world to describe a community that existed for the benefit of the larger community that surrounds it. They were to offer wisdom, guidance, love and service not for their own good alone but for others. It is this word that Jesus used to describe the community of his followers. It is this Greek word that we translate into English as church.
