Posted by darrancarr in Uncategorized. Tuesday to friday Work Experience! I spent this week in Queenstown on work experience for Queenstown Lakes District Council at the beutiful Queenstown Gardens. Spent Tuesday clearing up after large gale force winds the night before took down a few trees and left a lot of debris all over the QT Gardens. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday was spent with Val the head gardener and his assistant Joe.
Continued apricot thinning at Pisavale till 3pm. Then copper painting in Block 14.

Grape pruning this week and we concentrated on two techniques that are relevant to this area. We began with cane pruning. This involves choosing a new fruiting cane to replace last years, and also a 2nd cane that will be spurred to be the cane used the year after. The cut is made and old wood removed before tying down the new cane onto the fruiting wire. Plants are bought in May and will continue to produce for 3 ye.
Cherry trees 3-4 weeks from ripening,will be netted next year. Black cherry aphid on a few leaves. Pinot Gris frost damage 2 weeks down the track. The orchard and vineyard are looking great and we are all finished at the block. Tranquil setting at The Packing Shed cafe. We are going to miss this! Thursday-last day of our course-Propagation. Final tidied up irrigation solenoids and area labelling.
Last week of the term and also last week of my first year. We were out at the block. Out at the block, was raining in the morning and the continuation of the theory and the main topic we learnt on was about Cane Pruning. This entry was posted on July 3, 2013. Today we were out at Bannockburn pruning. We pruned old pear trees, and the apple trees. It got to 8 today and we had some sun! Shaking the apples off the tree.

Today we did irrigation checking in cheery orchiard and pipfruit orchiard and lot of tractor practice with mover and sprayer. Today is the last day of my course i am really happy to do this course. LAST WEEK OF TECH! Time has flown by since we began in Feb. We are out Bannockburn today with Trev but i leave about 9. 30 feeling sick as a dog. The others build picnic tables and have a general tidy up and deconstruct our fences we built. We head out Bannockburn today for our second irrigation install. We also start raking, and leveling out the soil for the lawn area out the front, me, Sarah and Alistar wit.
