True adventures happen when things go wrong. It is no exaggeration to say that the Norfolk and Western Railroad was once the very heart of Roanoke, Virginia. It was a major employer, its headquarters building was located in downtown Roanoke, and numerous rail lines and yards transected the city. One of the most significant symbols of the presence of the railroad in the city is the Shaffers Crossing yard.
