Whole-word instruction includes teaching words as units; children will recognize the spoken word as a meaningful unit. In whole-word instruction, students are shown a flash card with a word on it. Then the teacher pronounces it and asks the student to repeat it. The teachers usually starts with a small set of words and gradually builds the set.
