Each week a different faculty member from the Comparative Literature Program at Rutgers will give a lecture on his or her field of specialization. Professors will discuss the meanings and functions of monster figures in several literary traditions. We will also ask ourselves what different cultures understand to be a monster or monstrous. When and why monsters may be perceived as humane? When and why are human beings seen as monstrous? .
