Backcountry in Big Bend National Park. Big Bend National Park in south western Texas is big enough for anyone wanting to get away from it all hikers and backpackers, mountain bike riders, horse riders and four wheel drive enthusiasts. This is isolated, dry and rugged country. Visitors need to be well prepared. Take a detailed topographical map plus a compass. Many tracks are poorly marked. You should study your trail well before setting out.

Caring for Mom and Dad. Remembering Dad On His 90th Birthday. Dad was the ultimate baseball fan, especially of the Texas Rangers. I learned after his death in 2011 that he played on a baseball team in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. Date of photo is unknown. He died at the age of 87 in 2011. Recently, while throwing out old stuff, I found a letter he wrote to me in Spanish when I was a student at UT-Austin.
