The film had drama, but the drama was always balanced by lighter moments. It has a a very different tone from the neorealist films of the immediate post-war years. A very good movie by Vittorio De Sica.

Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu are wonderful to watch in this beautifully filmed look at French theater under the German occupation in 1942. The movie is about a theater ownwer, Lucas Steiner, who is Jewish and is forced to hide in the cellar, pretending to have left the country. His wife, Marion, runs the theater and stars in the new production. The leading man, Bernard is in love with her, but she keeps putting him off.

Kim Bassinger plays a reporter who interviews people as they arrive at the show. Celebrities march on and off the stage. Tim Robbins and Julia Roberts meet by accident, drink. fight, makeup and have an affair. A murderer is running loose but the fashion world must go no. So many beautiful scenes with the beautiful people, I can see why Altman had trouble cutting it down to the size it needed to be. Should have run at least an hour shorter.

This movie is made up of a collection of scenes, with a big cast of characters walking in and out. The movie is set in middle sized city run by corrupt officials. Some of the characters are trying to fight the corruption, but its hard to fight City Hall. City of Hope is a powerful film, .
