Saturday, June 22, 2013. Seeing Violence, Seeking Peace. This project to highlight our students desire for peace in Chicago was collaborative. Other classrooms, students and teachers around the city also worked to spread the word that our kids want to have a safe community. Here is some work from the wonderful students at Seward. They have had personal contact with violence and want their Back of Yards community to be a safe one as well. Please see their work here. Seeing Violence, Seeking Peace.

Last year, 506 people were killed in Chicago. Most of them were killed with guns. In our schools community area, Back of the Yards, 21 people have been killed in the past 12 months. Three young men who were known by many of our eighth graders were killed during this school year in separate incidents,PARSED CONTENT
The site had the following in the homepage, "A project by 8th graders at Seward Elementary, Chicago, IL, USA." I noticed that the web site stated " Seeing Violence, Seeking Peace." They also stated " Last year, 506 people were killed in Chicago. Most of them were killed with guns. In light of these troubling realities, eighth graders at Seward spent several weeks this spring in their Media Studies class examining the causes of gun violence, its impacts on families and communities, and possible strategies for reducing it.
