A St Bernard stood guard in front of a yellow-painted door at the end of the street. It growled and watched a small mutt walk away from the house and we imagined the two had had an argument.

I almost stepped on a dead bird. They decorated every other sidewalk square in alternating bird feather colors red, black, blue, yellow. We picked them up and ate them like candies. The black birds were sweeter than we expected and the blue ones were bitter. The red birds felt cold on our tongues and the yellows made us feel a little bit happier than we were before.
