The instructor is removed from an authoritarian position and is more of a facilitator. Moves the focus away from what the final product is and more onto what is going on when it is being written. Looks at contemporary cultural issues as a way of bridging the gap between the world of the academy and the world outside.

Ocus on the writing process which is brought this into the classroom. Class time is spent on writing, exploring, prewriting and discovery techniques rather than on the teacher lecturing. The students are encouraged to think of themselves as writers. Ocus on developing authentic voice.
