March 14, 2011 1157 pm. My mouth had been watering all day for the shrimp meal I planned to make tonight. I had taken them out of the freezer to thaw on Saturday afternoon, so the shrimp have only been in the fridge for 2 12 days. They didnt have an unusually fishy smell as I peeled them but as soon as I started to cook them I knew something was wrong. There was this strong scent of ammonia! If you smell ammonia while cooking shrimp- throw them out immediately! So, its salad for me tonight .
