This blog was designed under the direction of my Elementary Mathematics Methods course at the University of Texas at Austin. This is my second time to try this, because my computer decided to lock up before I could write the last few steps of my second strategy. So, I had to rewrite this blog post entirely. As I watched S work this problem, I was impressed by his tenacity to keep counting, not wanting to miss a numb.

Monday, October 18, 2010. Blog Entry 4- Invented Math Strategies. How many pennies does he have now? The student was familiar with the standard form of how we expect children to set up a subtraction problem. For the actual process of finding an answer she used direct modeling with the cubes and counted to find the answer needed. Tuesday, October 19, 2010. How do children develop their own strategies? Saturday, October 2, 2010. What was the specific mathematical content being taught? This week I taught them a lesson on how to use a specific method for word problems. After I modeled filling out this special I had them to read a word problem and underline any information that they thought would be important. After that, we began to fill out the Math Problem Solving Guide. Any specific talk moves being used? .
Monday, October 18, 2010. I never got the chance to explore my thinking and to find an algorithm that makes true sense in my head, is exhilarating. Another thing that comes to mind about my student is that once he noticed the unifix cubes in front of him, he never looked back! .

The site had the following in the homepage, "What do YOU know about math? In Reqd Blog Entry." I noticed that the web site stated " Invented math strategies are a particular area of interest to me." They also stated " Although I dont particularly like the term invented I lean towards personal, I do understand and value the meaning of the whole concept. By using their own personal strategies, the students are able to create their own meaning a skilltask that I find especially important.
