When you first join Second Life you have the option of choosing avatars from different backgrounds and race. I think when creating online avatars, people reproduce the racist, sexist and ableist structures of real life. When people assert that prejudice disappears in cyberspace, they inadvertently naturalize its occurrence offline by suggesting that the inequalities that exist in real life are inevitable.
Other things of a less intimate nature probably still carry that important connection to identity. Maybe those who engage heavily in flirting and flirt heavily with a particular online person will feel a real connection .
After a few months of playing on a virtual world I can safely say, I am glad I did not grow up playing these games! They would walk away or ignore me. I ran into this in every chat room. The reason I changed my avatar.
