When you first join Second Life you have the option of choosing avatars from different backgrounds and race. I think when creating online avatars, people reproduce the racist, sexist and ableist structures of real life. When people assert that prejudice disappears in cyberspace, they inadvertently naturalize its occurrence offline by suggesting that the inequalities that exist in real life are inevitable.

Second Life has a fair amount of choices, as far as what race you want your avatar to be. Like i have mentioned before my avatar is a black male, trying to gain a different perspective than my real life.

Final Thoughts on Second Life. When I was in Miami I noticed by the conversation that many of the people were Latino or Hispanic. They were speaking Spanish, so I had no idea what they were saying.

Virtual worlds are a very interesting experience. I went into the world feeling skeptical and wondering what I could possibly gain from a virtual world, but I learned a lot from the time I spent there. Culture shock over the internet. Create a free website or blog at WordPress.
