Calhoun Shafer, a graduate student in political theory. My research examines political ideas their histories of contestation, their uses for social inquiry, and their roles in emancipatory action.

My research and teaching interests are in political theory and the history of political thought. I am particularly interested in the politics of the economy.

I also study civil-military relations in authoritarian regimes and the economic activities of militaries in the developing world. I use both historical qualitative methods as well as quantitative approaches.
